4a Read the following case study. What kind of problems can you think of with this proposal?

A school board of governors is thinking of changing the school start time from 8.30 am to 8.00 am. Lessons currently finish at 3.30 pm and that would change to 3.00 pm. The head of the school is going to hold a meeting with representatives of staff, students and parents to discuss the idea.

4b Work in groups of four. Each of you should take one of the roles below. Prepare what you will say in the meeting, then hold the meeting. The head of school should run the meeting but everyone should speak.
You don't have to reach an agreement.

Head of school
You would like to move the school start time from 8.30 am to 8.00 am. You should start the meeting by explaining your reasons for this.

Teachers' representative
Teachers are concerned about pupils' attendance and concentration in class. Many teachers also feel that more time is needed in the afternoons for sports, arts and other non-academic activities.

Students' representative
You would like the school start time to be later in the day. You should explain your reasons for this.

Parents' representative
Parents are concerned about recent academic results in the school. Many parents have planned their working day to fit in with the school times.
You should explain your concerns and views.

5 Work in pairs to discuss these questions.

• How well do school start times in your country fit in with the needs of young people?

• Would it make sense to change school start times? Why?/Why not?

• Would many objections be raised to the idea of having later start times? Why? / Why not?
